Low-moisture clean

How we clean a mattress

  1. Check the mattress

We read the care label, look at the stains and ask what caused them. Memory foam holds water longer than a sprung mattress, so we use less on foam.

  2. Vacuum the dust

A slow, deep vacuum over the top, sides and seams pulls out the dust and dead skin that dust mites feed on.

  3. Treat stains and smells

Sweat, urine and food stains get a pre-treatment. We then rinse with a small amount of water and pull it straight back out with suction, so the filling stays as dry as we can keep it.

  4. Dry with airflow

We leave the room with the window open or an air mover running. Most single and double mattresses are dry in 4 to 6 hours. Leave the bedding off until the surface is dry to the touch.

What affects the price

  • The size of the mattress

    A cot mattress is from £25, a single from £35, a double from £45, a king from £55 and a super king from £65.

  • Stains and smells

Sweat marks lift quickly. Urine that has soaked deep into the filling needs more treatment and more time. If a mattress needs more than a standard clean, we tell you why and what it costs before we start.

  • One side or two

We clean both sides where the mattress can be turned. Many modern mattresses are made to be slept on one side only, so we clean the top, the sides and the seams.

  • How much you book

The minimum charge is £60, so a single mattress on its own costs the minimum. Add the other beds, a sofa or the bedroom carpet to the same visit.

Mattresses we clean

  • Pocket sprung and open coil

Air moves through the springs, so a sprung mattress dries faster than foam. Most are dry in 4 to 6 hours.

  • Memory foam

Foam soaks up water and holds it, so we use less of it and pull it straight back out. Memory foam can take up to 12 hours to dry.

  • Latex and hybrid

Latex is dense and slow to dry, and hybrids have a foam layer on top of springs. Both get the same low-moisture clean as memory foam.

  • Cot and children’s mattresses

Small and often foam, so we use very little water. A cot mattress is from £25, and the minimum charge is £60.

Stains: what comes out

  • Sweat and yellowing

Sweat stains sit near the surface and usually lift well. Yellowing from years of body oil lifts a lot too, though very old marks may fade rather than disappear.

  • Urine

We use an enzyme cleaner that breaks down the source of the smell. Fresh stains lift best. Old urine that has soaked deep into the core is harder to shift, and we tell you what to expect first.

  • Blood

Fresh blood usually lifts. Old blood may only fade. If it happens again, dab it with cold water, never hot, because heat sets it.

  • Will not come out

Scorch marks, damage to the cover and mould that has grown into the filling. That is damage, not dirt, so a clean cannot fix it. A mattress with mould inside needs replacing.

Getting the bed ready

  • Strip the bed

Take off the sheets, the mattress protector and any topper. It is a good time to wash them at 60 degrees, so clean bedding goes back on a clean mattress.

  • Clear round the bed

Move anything stored on or right next to the bed, so we can reach the sides and the seams.

  • Signs of bed bugs

If you think you have bed bugs, call a pest control firm first. Cleaning does not end an infestation. If we find signs of bed bugs on the day, we stop and tell you.

Drying and protecting it

  • Let it dry

Open a window, keep the room warm and leave the bedding off until the surface is dry to the touch. Most mattresses are dry in 4 to 6 hours, and memory foam can take up to 12.

  • Use a protector

A washable mattress protector stops sweat, spills and accidents reaching the mattress, and is far easier to clean.

  • Keeping it clean

Wash the bedding at 60 degrees every week, and turn or rotate the mattress as the label says. Cleaning the mattress every 6 to 12 months can help keep dust mites down.

What a clean will not fix

  • Bed bugs

We do not treat bed bugs, and cleaning does not end an infestation. Once a pest control firm has treated the room, we can clean the mattress to take out marks and dust.

  • Sagging and broken springs

A clean freshens the surface and the top layers. It cannot fix a dip in the middle or a spring you can feel.

  • Allergies on their own

Cleaning can lift dust, dead skin and dust mite droppings from the top layers, which may help. It is not a medical treatment.

How a visit works

  • Point out the problem areas

Show us any stain or mark, and tell us what caused it and whether anything has been used on it already. Some home stain removers set a stain or strip the colour, and that changes what we use.

  • Water and power

We bring the products and the equipment. We only need running water and a plug socket, so leave both on until we finish.

  • Pets and children

Keep them out of the room while we work, and off anything we cleaned until it is dry.

Questions

How much does mattress cleaning cost?

A cot mattress is from £25, a single from £35, a double from £45, a king from £55 and a super king from £65. We confirm a fixed price before we start, and the minimum charge is £60.

Does mattress cleaning get rid of dust mites?

It can reduce them, along with the dead skin and dust they feed on. No clean removes every mite, and they build up again over time. Washing bedding at 60 degrees every week and cleaning the mattress every 6 to 12 months can help keep the numbers down.

Can you remove urine stains and smells from a mattress?

Usually, yes, especially if the stain is fresh. We use an enzyme cleaner that breaks down the source of the smell. Old urine that has soaked deep into the core is harder to shift, and we tell you what is likely to lift before we start.

Can you remove sweat stains and yellowing?

Sweat stains sit near the surface and usually lift well. Yellowing from years of body oil also lifts a lot, though very old marks may fade rather than disappear.

How long does a mattress take to dry?

Most are dry in 4 to 6 hours. Memory foam can take up to 12 hours. Open a window, keep the room warm and leave the bedding off until the surface is dry to the touch.

Will mattress cleaning help with allergies?

It can help. Dust mite droppings can trigger asthma and allergy symptoms in some people, and cleaning can remove some dust and droppings from the top layers. It is not a medical treatment. A mattress protector and a weekly hot wash of the bedding help keep it that way.

Does mattress cleaning get rid of bed bugs?

No. Cleaning does not end a bed bug infestation, and we do not claim it does. If you think you have bed bugs, call a pest control firm first. Once they have treated the room, we can clean the mattress to take out marks and dust. If we find signs of bed bugs on the day, we stop and tell you.
