How we clean a rug
Check the rug
We look at what it is made of and how it was made, then test the dyes on a hidden spot. We point out worn patches and moth damage before we start.
Take out the dry grit
Most of the dirt in a rug is dry soil at the base of the pile. We lift the rug where we can and vacuum the pile and the back.
Clean to suit the fibre
Wool and Persian rugs get a low-moisture clean with a gentle, wool-safe detergent, so the colours stay put. Synthetic rugs can take a full rinse and extraction. Fringes are done by hand.
Comb and dry
We comb the pile one way and leave the rug to dry flat with the window open. Synthetic rugs are usually dry in a few hours. Wool takes longer, often up to 24 hours.
What affects the price
The size of the rug
A hallway runner is from £30, a small rug up to 120 x 170 cm from £35, a medium rug up to 160 x 230 cm from £45 and a large rug up to 200 x 300 cm from £60.
Measuring your rug
Measure the length and width without the fringe. An 8 by 10 foot rug is about 245 x 305 cm, a little over our large size, so send us the size or a photo and we price it first.
What it is made of
Synthetic rugs take a standard clean. Wool and Persian rugs are from £70, because they need dye testing on every colour and a slower, low-moisture clean.
How much you book
The minimum charge is £60, so one small rug costs the minimum on its own. Add a second rug, a sofa or a mattress to the same visit to make the most of it.
Rugs we clean
Synthetic rugs
Polypropylene, nylon and polyester rugs are hard-wearing and take water well, so they can have a full rinse and extraction. Most are dry in 2 to 4 hours.
Wool rugs
Wool is soft and holds dirt deep in the pile. Too much water or heat can shrink it or make the colours bleed, so it gets a low-moisture clean with a wool-safe detergent.
Persian and hand-knotted rugs
Older rugs often have natural dyes that can run. We test every coloured area first, and if a dye runs we use a gentler method or leave that area alone.
Shaggy and deep pile
Long pile hides a lot of grit and takes longer to dry. We vacuum it slowly, clean it in more passes and comb the pile so it does not mat.
Viscose, jute and sisal
Viscose can lose its shine or turn brown when wet, and plant fibres such as jute and sisal can stain brown too. We check these rugs and tell you before we start what we can safely do.
Stains: what comes out
Usually lifts well
Mud, food, tea, coffee, wine and the grey dirt that builds up where people walk, especially when the stain is fresh.
Pet urine and smells
We treat urine with an enzyme cleaner that breaks down the source of the smell. Old urine on wool can leave a mark, and if it has soaked through, the floor underneath needs treating too. Read how to remove pet urine from carpet for what to expect.
May only fade
Ink, candle wax, hair dye and stains that have been there for years. We test them first and tell you what is likely to lift.
Will not come out
Bleach marks, burns, dye that has already run and sun fading. That is damage to the fibre, not dirt, so a clean cannot bring the colour back.
Getting the rug ready
Clear the rug
Take toys, plants and small furniture off the rug. We need space round it to work, and the rug needs to lie flat while it dries.
Check the label
Look on the back for a label that says what the rug is made of. If there is no label, a photo of the front and back helps us tell.
Drying and care
Let it dry flat
Keep the rug flat with a window open or the heating on low. Synthetic rugs are usually dry in 2 to 4 hours, and wool often takes 12 to 24 hours.
Furniture back on
Wait until the rug is fully dry before you put furniture back on it, so wood stain and metal feet do not mark the pile.
Keeping it clean
Vacuum it once a week, and turn the rug round every 6 to 12 months so it wears and fades evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water, and do not rub.
What a clean will not fix
Moth damage and worn patches
Bare patches where moths have eaten the pile, or where feet have worn it down, stay bare after a clean. We point them out before we start.
Frayed fringes
We clean fringes by hand, but a clean does not repair them, and fringes that are already frayed may fray further.
Rugs that need a workshop
We clean rugs at home. If a rug is very old or valuable and needs a specialist workshop, we tell you before we start.
How a visit works
Point out the problem areas
Show us any stain or mark, and tell us what caused it and whether anything has been used on it already. Some home stain removers set a stain or strip the colour, and that changes what we use.
Water and power
We bring the products and the equipment. We only need running water and a plug socket, so leave both on until we finish.
Pets and children
Keep them out of the room while we work, and off anything we cleaned until it is dry.

Questions
How much does rug cleaning cost?
A hallway runner is from £30, a small rug from £35, a medium rug from £45 and a large rug from £60. Wool and Persian rugs are from £70. We confirm a fixed price before we start, and the minimum charge is £60.
Do you take the rug away to clean it?
No. We clean rugs at your home, so there is no collection and no waiting for it to come back. If a rug is very old or valuable and needs a specialist workshop, we tell you before we start.
Can you clean a wool rug at home?
Yes. Wool does not like a lot of water or heat, so we use a low-moisture method and a wool-safe detergent. That keeps the pile from shrinking and the colours from bleeding.
Can you clean a Persian or hand-knotted rug?
Usually, yes. We test the dyes on every coloured area first. If a dye runs, we switch to a gentler method or leave that area alone, and we tell you why. Some old rugs have dyes that will not take any water.
How long does a rug take to dry?
Synthetic rugs are usually dry in 2 to 4 hours. Wool rugs take longer, often 12 to 24 hours, because the fibre holds water. Keep the rug flat, open a window and keep pets off it until it is dry.
Can you get pet urine out of a rug?
Often, yes. We treat urine with an enzyme cleaner that breaks down the source of the smell. Old urine on wool can leave a mark that will not lift, and if it has soaked through to the floor underneath, the floor needs treating too. We tell you what to expect before we start.
Do you clean the fringes?
Yes, by hand. We keep fringes out of the machine and rinse them gently, because cotton fringes can pick up dye from the rug. Fringes that are already frayed may fray further, and we tell you first.
