Is professional carpet cleaning worth it?
Usually, if the carpet is still sound. A clean costs a fraction of a new fitted carpet, but it cannot repair wear, damaged backing or mould.
What a clean costs against a new carpet
Replacing a carpet means paying for the carpet, the underlay, a fitter and the removal of the old one. MyJobQuote’s carpet fitting cost guide (last updated 14 September 2026, checked 23 October 2026) puts a fitted carpet for a 12 m² bedroom at about £250 for budget quality, £430 for standard and £900 for premium. A 20 m² living room at standard quality is about £720. Replacing an existing standard-quality bedroom carpet, with removal and disposal, comes to £430 to £500.
Our carpet cleaning starts at £45 for a bedroom and £60 for a lounge. If the carpet is in good condition, cleaning is the cheaper way to get it looking right again. If it is not in good condition, the comparison does not hold, and the last two sections explain why.
Hire machine or professional?
Hiring is the cheapest way to clean one or two rooms. Rug Doctor lists its standard machine from £27.99 for 24 hours, with a hand tool for stairs and edges at £4.99 extra (checked 23 October 2026). You also pay for cleaning solution, and the firm says to use its own, because laundry detergent can damage the machine and the carpet.
- The work is yours. You move the furniture, pre-treat the stains and make several passes. A whole house is a day’s work, plus drying time.
- Soap left behind. If solution stays in the pile, the carpet can feel sticky and pick up dirt faster. Rinsing properly and lifting as much water as you can helps.
- Too much water. A carpet that stays damp takes longer to dry. We use strong suction and air movers, so most carpets are dry in 2 to 4 hours.
For one or two lightly soiled rooms, hire a machine. For a whole home, stairs, wool, pet urine or a deposit at stake, a professional is usually worth the extra.
How often to clean a carpet
In most homes, every 12 to 18 months is enough. If you have pets, young children or a busy hallway, every 6 to 12 months is better. Hallways and stairs need it more often than bedrooms.
Vacuum regularly in between, because most of the dirt in a carpet is dry soil and a vacuum lifts it before it is ground in. Check your carpet’s warranty or care label as well. Some set their own requirements for how often it is cleaned and by what method.
When it is worth it
- The carpet is sound but dull, with dark walkways and the odd stain.
- You are selling, letting or moving into a home and want the carpets fresh.
- You are moving out of a rental. Carpets are part of the end of tenancy checklist.
- There has been a spill, a pet accident or an illness in the house.
- It is a high-traffic area, such as the hallway or stairs, that is clearly dirtier than the rest.

When it is not worth it
- The carpet is worn out. Cleaning removes dirt, not wear. If the pile is flat or thin, the backing shows through or threads are pulled, a clean will not fix it.
- The backing is failing. If the backing is coming away from the carpet (delamination) or crumbling, cleaning will not repair it. A loose or rippled carpet is a fitting problem, not a cleaning one.
- There is mould in the underlay or backing. A musty smell that returns after cleaning, or dark spots on the underside, usually means damp. Cleaning can lift surface spots, but it will not fix mould that has grown into the backing or underlay. Find and fix the damp first, and expect to replace the carpet.
- Old urine has soaked into the underlay. The smell keeps coming back. See how to remove pet urine from carpet.
- The damage is to the colour. Bleach marks, dye transfer and sun fade are colour loss, not dirt.
- You are replacing it soon. Do not clean a carpet that is going in a skip next month.
Getting the most from a clean
- Clear small items, cables and ornaments from the floor. We move sofas, chairs and tables ourselves and put them back on protective pads.
- Point out stains and say what caused them. Coffee, wine, pet accidents and dye need different treatment.
- Mention anything unusual, such as a wool carpet or a recent attempt with a strong product.
- Keep pets and children off until the carpet is dry. Most carpets are dry in 2 to 4 hours.
- Keep the invoice, in case your carpet warranty asks for proof of cleaning.
A quick way to decide
Compare a walkway with a part of the carpet that is never walked on, such as under a bed. If the hidden part is much brighter, the difference is mostly dirt, and cleaning can lift it. If the walkway pile is flattened or thin, that is wear, and cleaning will not undo it.
Then press the pile: does it spring back? Look at the backing at a cut edge or under a door strip for crumbling, and smell the carpet for damp. If all three look fine, a clean is almost certainly worth it.
If you are unsure, ask a cleaner to look first. We test a hidden spot before every clean and tell you what will and will not come out before we start.
Questions
How much does it cost to replace a carpet compared with cleaning it?
MyJobQuote puts a fitted carpet for a 12 m² bedroom at about £250 for budget quality, £430 for standard and £900 for premium (last updated 14 September 2026, checked 23 October 2026). Our bedroom clean starts at £45 and a lounge clean at £60, and we confirm a fixed price before we start.
Is it worth hiring a carpet cleaner instead?
For one or two lightly soiled rooms, yes. Rug Doctor lists its standard machine from £27.99 for 24 hours, plus cleaning solution (checked 23 October 2026). For a whole home, stairs, pet urine or a rental deposit, a professional usually saves you time and gives a more even result.
How often should carpets be professionally cleaned?
Every 12 to 18 months in most homes. Every 6 to 12 months if you have pets, young children or a busy hallway. Check your carpet’s warranty or care label too, because some set their own cleaning requirements.
Will cleaning make my carpet look new?
It removes dirt and most stains, so a dull carpet looks brighter. It cannot undo wear, fading, bleach marks or flattened pile. Compare a walkway with a part of the carpet that is never walked on: the difference between them shows how much is dirt and how much is wear.
Can carpet cleaning damage a carpet?
Done badly, yes. Too much water can soak the backing and underlay, and strong products or hard scrubbing can mark some fibres and dyes. A good cleaner tests a hidden spot first. We do that before every clean and tell you what will and will not come out.
